Help is always at hand

Emergencies in orthodontics are rare, however sometimes braces do break, become loose
or cause irritations to your gums, lips or cheeks. We can advise you how to manage many of these situations; however others need to be addressed by us in the practice. In all instances call us first and we will determine your best course of action.

In the case of loose brackets or bands

Call our practice for advice if a brace or wire is loosened. The brace may need to be re-fitted as soon as possible. You may have a situation that requires cutting a wire or sliding a bracket off a wire at night or over the weekend. Never attempt to cut the wire yourself, always call our practice for an appointment. Please remember to bring any broken parts to the practice when you come in for the repair.
Sometimes small elastic bands are used together with braces to straighten the teeth and can sometimes break, don’t panic should you swallow the band this is not a problem and another pack of bands can be obtained from the practice if required.

When wires (distal ends) irritate

Distal ends are the sharp ends on the wires of your brace that can stick out and irritate the cheek as the teeth move. Call us for advice. Sometimes the wire can be moved, however, if not it is possible to cover the problem end with a small piece of specialist wax. We supply wax in many flavours to cover sharp pieces on the brace, bubble gum, mint, chocolate, grape and cherry. For hygiene don’t use anything else as the wax is always readily available and free of charge.

Lost a separator?

Sometimes a separator will come out before your next appointment. This usually means that it has done its job and enough space has been created. Call us to determine whether it needs to be replaced or not.

Discomfort after treatment?

Some discomfort, soreness or pain may be experienced during the first week after your braces are in place and routine adjustments are complete. You may take medication to relieve this while you adjust to your new braces. A warm cloth or heating pad may reduce the soreness in your jaws. Again should you have any concerns please call us.
